5 out of 5 stars Marley & Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog   November 21, 2008

I must say taking care of impulsive dogs like Marley demands patience and hard work. So I can appreciate the Grogan's dedicated care of this hyperactive dog, Marley, who had the typical traits of ADHD. Of course, dealing with ADHD people is so hard. When it comes to dogs with ADHD, that's even more difficult. He wasn't able to do as the owner told him to, made a lot of mischief, and so on - nothing was so annoying as these for most of dog owners. I might have flown off the handle if I had found his frequent misbehaviors. - "Next time you do this, you are going to the slaughterhouse! Get it?" I just wonder whether it meant animal abuse...

However, I felt Marley was John's vivid reminder when I found he received lots of e-mails after Marley's death. I guess that was mainly because most of those who e-mailed him said encouragingly that they had the same or worse experience with their misbehaved dogs. Perhaps John Grogan saw through Marley's pros as well as cons of the dog's rambunctiousness.

Anyway, without unconditional love with Marley, the hyperactive and rambunctious dog, John Grogan would never have written Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog, I'd say.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't wanna love it, but I DO!   September 22, 2008

I'm not really a fan of touchy feely smooshy books, so I was somewhat sceptical when I looked at the cover of this book my wife brought home. Then I started to read it, and was lost. I grew up with a German shepherd who failed obedience classes in three separate schools, the last of whom had a trainer who said of my dog, "Gosh, he's really stubborn, isn't he?" This book brought all of those times rushing back.

My daughter had been begging me to get a dog for three solid years, week in and week out. I had steadfastly refused, remembering all of the trouble, cost, destruction, insanity, etc. Then I read this book. We now have a brand new German shepherd. My wife tells me that she has never seen me relaxed in the entire time she's known me.

If you love dogs, this book is amazing. If you don't, this will probably fly right past you. Some people might criticize the way Marley is trained - some people will criticize anything - but this book is a true love affair.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books   July 6, 2008

I was skeptical when my coworker loaned me this book. She said every dog lover has a "Marley" in their past. But from the first page, I was hooked.

"Marley and Me" had me laughing out loud (in the strangest places) and crying shamelessly in others. This book is brilliantly written and flows seamlessly. I was lost for hours in this beautiful story that John Grogan brought to life for me.

What am amazing tribute to man's best friend.

I highly recommend this book to anyone - dog lover or not. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone that has had a big pup, very easy to relate to!   July 1, 2008

If you love dogs, especially if you have them, then you need this book. We have a Great Dane and I could relate to this book so well. It allowed us to feel light hearted even when the frustration that was caused by our giant, full of life puppy almost drove us to tears.
You will love this book even more if you have had a dog that acts like Marley in training class. Here's the scoop, like kids, dogs are not all the same-NOT ALL EASY TO TRAIN! It's natural..some are more energetic or rebelious. Your trainer will always tell you differently. Don't listen.
(Once, I ran into my old dog trainer screaming at her dog because it wouldnt stay in the car)
Happy reading.

Oh my. If you are not a dog owner and are thinking about becoming one, read this book. Marley is a nightmare with a smile. He is the dog you see your neighbor being pull by on there evening walks. I don't remember laughing so hard I had to stop reading. My only request in my book reading life would be to find a book were the end is not the end of the dog. Love the book, love the dog. Very well put together. You will laugh yourself to the breeder to get your own Marley...good luck with that.
