4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and moving reading   August 27, 2008
Patricia J (Calgary)
This was an inspiring and moving account of one person making a huge difference in the world. It certainly renewed my faith in the essential kindness of humans, despite the "bigger" stories that make the news more frequently. Despite being a story about charitable actions, it is not at all preachy and the co-author's journalism background is evident in how the story moves quickly and keeps you turning the pages.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening Delight To Read - A Beautiful True Story   August 25, 2008

I just have to say, the story of Greg Mortenson and what he has done to improve the lives of the people in Central Asia is awe-inspiring and humbling. We are so conditioned to believe that one person can't make a difference that to read a tale that you know happened, makes it even more incredible.
I will be encouraging all my friends to read this book and learn of the peoples we all too easily just lump together as "terrorists" following 9/11. Hopefully we will be able to contribute in some way to helping stop the violence over in central asia with schools instead of soldiers even just a little bit sooner.

Three Cups of Tea delivers a message every person needs to understand. This is the story of how Greg Mortenson has worked, beyond what seems humanly possible, since 1993 to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson is quoted in the book as saying "...working over there, I've learned a few things. I've learned that terror doesn't happen because some groups of people somewhere like Pakistan or Afghanistan simply decide to hate us. It happens because children aren't being offered a bright enough future that they have a reason to choose life over death." He has been befriended and if there could be such a word `befamilied' by local residents because they have seen firsthand that his commitment is personal. Mortenson has continually been confronted with the objections that building schools may be nice but security has to come first, to which he replies: at the time the book was written there had been perhaps 114 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired into Afghanistan at a cost of approximately $840,000 each. For the cost of just one of those missiles, Mortenson says, dozens of schools could be built that could provide tens of thousands of student with a balance nonextremist education over the course of a generation. 'Which', he asks, 'do you think will make us more secure?' He quotes figures that astonish those of us who do not understand the reality of these remote villages in which he works. Through the Central Asia Institute for which Greg Mortenson works they can educate a child for $1/month, a teacher's salary is $1/day. One man, having seen a need in a land far from home, has demonstrated for us the power of simply asking "how can I help".

5 out of 5 stars An incredible & inspirational story!   August 10, 2008

I was initially drawn to read the book based on the outdoor/climbing aspects of the story that my wife mentioned that I might enjoy. As I got into the book however the story of Greg Mortenson's life and his legacy of building schools in Central Asia were so incredibly insiprational that I couldn't put the book down. Life can get pretty busy and finding time to read typically means a few pages late at night after the kids go to bed and after finishing some work on the laptop yet with this book I found myself reading it all the time to find out what happens to Greg as he pursues his passion for building schools in some of the most remote and dangerous places in the world. I was reading it so often that my oldest son even noticed and commented that "hey I didn't know that you read novels daddy".
This is a must read book for anyone and the best non-fiction I have ever read!
