4 out of 5 stars Great book   September 8, 2008
D. Small
I just bought my first SLR camera and needed a book to get me started. This book was great because it wasn't heavy on theory. It was much more geared towards practical applications which I liked. For example there's a separate chapter on how to shoot flowers, how to shoot landscapes, how to shoot portaits, etc.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to get serious...   March 9, 2008

Want to raise your photo level by a "big" step, this is a must. Easy to read - every page is a useful tip - and he also provides insights on what to buy for your tiny or no limit budget when you start in this domain in regards to lenses, accessories, etc. I found also that many tips were not only aimed at DSLR owners also, so everyone can benefit.

Save on shipping and buy volume 2 at the same time. You won't regret it as volume 2 has a whole section on how to use your flash the right way.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to serious photography   February 23, 2008

I enjoy photography and am exploring my first digital SLR camera. This book answered many of my current questions, and questions I hadn't thought of yet.

Each chapter tackles different topics like landscape photography, portrait photography, sharp pictures, printing, etc. Within each chapter, topics are covered on a single page including a sample photograph.

The book is an introduction to serious photography, addressing about 170 topics. It's very easy to read and understand. The author shows his sense of humour with oddball paragraphs and pages in the book. I enjoyed these diversions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with lots of good advice   February 13, 2008

My wife and I are just getting into photography for fun (as opposed to just shooting lots of snapshots). I found this book to be full of excellent advice from Scott Kelby whom I watch on the Internet in his Photoshop User TV video podcasts. The tip-per-page format is great for letting you pick up the book when you have a moment - a typical way I have to read in our busy household. He also gives straightforward and usable advice on equipment, using his own setup as an example. It is written in a very casual tone which is typical of Scott if you see him on Photoshop User TV - cheesy jokes and all. I highly recommend this for someone who is getting into photography and looking to take their shots to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photography overview   January 27, 2008
D. Margison (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
I have been interested in photography for years but just recently got more serious and want to learn better techniques. I found this book by Scott Kelby to be interesting and informative. Read the entire book in two evenings and have lots of new ideas that I cannot wait to try. The book has just enough humour to keep it interesting. Not a lot of technical stuff, just some cool ideas to try and what better way for an amature to learn. For anyone interested in Photoshop editing, the link to Photo Shop TV is quite interesting.
