Nolan's Noir Caped CrusaderJanuary 2, 2009 Douglas Mann(London, Ontario, Canada) Living up to its hype, Nolan delivers a dark knight that's the closest so far to Frank Miller's 1980s re-imagining of the caped crusader. It also incorporates elements of more recent noir style Batman graphic novels such as the Long Halloween and Dark Victory, with their mixing together of super-villains and mafia gangsters. Nolan's Batman is darker than Burton's 1989 version and lives in a very real looking Gotham City, a far cry from the fantastic art deco monstrosities of the earlier film. Adding to its realism is Nolan's restraint with the use of special effects, with those included merging very nicely with live action shots. The opening shots of a group of masked men robbing a bank was closer to a Scorsese film or Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon than a superhero blockbuster. Heath Ledger's Joker is a true psychopath and agent of chaos, his performance creating a very believable and scary master criminal. Aaron Eckhardt plays against type as the crusading Harvey Dent aka Two Face. Gary Oldham as Jim Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred, and Maggie Gyllenhall as Rachel Dawes all put in solid performances. The Joker's musings about the hypocrisy of the general populace about hero worship is only partly refuted by events in the film - there is a difference between masked vigilantes and vicious criminals, but it's not as clear as the typical teenage comic-book fan might think. My only complaint was that the fight sequences in the last half hour or so of the film were so darkly lit, frantic, and jumbled together that it wasn't always possible to figure out what was going on. Just when I thought Iron Man was the best superhero film!
"Why so serious?"December 11, 2008 H. Atwal The greatest movie of the year finally makes it's debut on bluray. And it's definitely living up to the hype.
I've seen this movie in theatres, it was freakin' amazing. The storyline is at the mind games level for you "intellectuals", and at amazing IMAX bluray full 1920x1080 5.l truehd batman battles for you eye candy holics. One of the best looking bluray's I own, if not the best. I won't mention anything about the storyline, everyone knows it was amazing anyways. :)
New Breed of Criminal...The JokerDecember 10, 2008 Roland Catholique Never have I went to the movies and actually been so engrossed in storytelling of any kind. The Dark Knight changed that. I watched it twice at the theaters. Now I can watch it again and again. Production value is near perfection on all fronts of movie making. So close in fact, I actually believe there is a Batman roaming around fighting crime somewhere in the world.
The Blueray Disc is a must buy. If you dont have this in your collection go out and get right away!
Watcheable... I guess.December 3, 2008 D. Aletkine 1 out of 37 found this review helpful
I guess I'll voice my vote, this movie is OK. The good are the fight and action sequences, style is very much the same as first movie, the Joker is played very well, but logic of this movie never fails to be too stupid. Hmm, why does Batman make the decisions he makes (don't wanna spoil them), but they are quite irrational in real life. How Joker manages to escape from jail is so lame, but oh well. Charlie (I think that's the name), is for some reason changes his mind about Batman during hospital scene - I couldn't understand that. Also the character of Bruce's girlfriend is strange, she doesn't love Bruce, she loves Batman - why? Aren't they one and the same, guess not for her - it seems a bit silly, like her character wasn't well though out and then they removed her from the movie entirely, good riddance I guess. Oh, and SWAT team is of course no match for Batman, not even a scratch on him. So, lots of this makes no sense, but if you can look over those things, you'll find this movie brilliant. It's not as good as the first though, for the aforementioned reasons.
