4 von 5 Sternen Epic thought experiment   November 13, 2008
H. Moser

Another massive book by Neal Stephenson, who (fortunately) doesn't constrain any of his convoluted thoughts and doesn't hesitate to elaborate on highbrow details. Meta-physics meets quantum physics meets philosophy of mind meets linguistics meets religion vs. science meets... you name it. It's all in there, and most of the time you have the feeling that it actually makes sense.

Stephenson manages to create a critical para-world, so similar to ours in many ways but yet so different, which at first it seems like a very elaborate but entertaining (terrene) society bashing. The genius though, lies in the application of Platonic idealism such that the reason why this para-world reflects so many similarities becomes clearer as the book progresses but never loses the ability to mirror defects in our world.

That aside, the book offers much entertainment and an epic narrative which keeps you going through all of the book, hardly ever making you tire of it. Unfortunately, unlike in the beginning, the closer the book moves towards the grand finale, the less attention is paid to detail and entertaining musings. One might argue that the book is long enough as it is, but those extra pages wouldn't have made much of a difference given the 900-something it already sports.
