Dieses Buch ist eine leidenschaftliche Werbung für das Lesen und für Literatur. Eine unterhaltsame, humorvolle, geistreiche, originelle Geschichte über die britische Königin, die das Lesen für sich entdeckt. Unterstützt von ihrem Angestellten Norman beginnt die Königin Bücher zu lesen. Dies missfällt jedoch vielen Personen in ihrer Umgebung, allen voran ihrem Private Secretary, Sir Kevin. Denn anstatt sich ganz dem Wohl ihres Volkes zu widmen, wird die Königin immer öfter in ein Buch vertieft angetroffen. Ob auf dem Weg zu einer royalen Verpflichtung oder im Urlaub mit dem Prime Minister, die Bücher sind stets dabei! Noch schlimmer ist, dass die Königin ihre Gesprächspartner neuerdings über Literatur befragt. Das überfordert sowohl ihre Untertanen, als auch Regierungschefs anderer Länder. Wer liest denn schon Bücher?
Sir Kevin versucht verzweifelt, den Lesedrang der Königin zu bremsen. Ohne Erfolg! Angeregt durch das Lesen beginnt die Queen, ihre Umgebung aufmerksamer und kritischer zu betrachten. Das beunruhigt nicht nur den Premierminister. Als sie beginnt, die übliche königliche Routine zu verlassen, führt das zu vielen unerwarteten Konflikten und amüsanten Begebenheiten.
Das Buch enthält zudem viele kluge Gedanken über die Rolle einer Königin und wie sie die Welt wahrnimmt. Geschrieben ist es in sehr schönem Englisch. Ich habe viele Passagen gleich zweimal gelesen um nichts zu verpassen!

This book about books and about reading is truly a gem.
I smiled throughout the entire 120 pages ... Alan Bennett not only is a connoisseur of the Royal Household and related absurdities but also a convincing advocate for literacy and education. All to be taken with a grain of salt.

I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. This is a very wry and witty little story of an elderly monarch discovering first literature and then a new way of seeing the world around her. Ultimately her love for anything from Marcel Proust to Sylvia Plath leads her to take the step from reader to author and from queen to citizen.
Reading the autobiography of Lauren Bacall it begins to dawn on her that she might have missed a few things in life,and her new found love of French literature leads to embarrassment when during a state dinner she promptly quizzes the French President on Jean Genet...
The novel is so brief, there is no danger of it ever being boring. This is of course a take on Elizabeth II and not the real queen, nor is it Helen Mirren in the film The Queen. This is an elderly lady, not all that disimilar from the one in Bennett's "The Clothes They Stood Up In", who has been a doer all her life and with the help of stumbling upon a mobile library in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and a young gay servant, starts to reflect and to rebel against the conformity that has been regulating her entire life. A delight to read and very funny indeed.

Visually, the book "The Uncommon Reader" by Alan Bennett is nice and pretty. As regards content it is less interesting and the novel is even boring in parts. The idea of writing about the Queen and her growing interest in reading books is strange. You have to be interested in the Queen to like the book. The missing humour and the plot which seems to have no structure make the novel strenuous to deal with. Even the Queen}s development through the book which is her decision to write an own book isn}t exciting. The book contains no statement.
